Communication Arts Interactive Annual 8
http://www.commarts.com/CA/interactive/cai02
This competition run by Communication Art magazine drew over 2000 entries world-wide. Entries included: websites, kiosks, cd-rom projects and PDA's. 47 projects were selected as winners and showcased in hardcopy in the September/October issue of the magazine as well as being showcased online. Categories are: Advertising, Business, Entertainment, Info Design and Self Promo. I usually find the 'Self Promo' ones particularly interesting as they tend to be more experimental and innovative and are not constrained by client briefs. You can also check out previous years' winners at http://www.commarts.com/CA/interactive

A World Without Water
http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0234/otis.php
This article discusses the limited water resources in the world, the privatisation of water in some parts of the world and the implications of this for a number of developing countries such as parts of South Africa. This article reports that there are only
8.6 million cubic miles of fresh water left on earth and the UN predicts that two-thirds of the world's population will live in water-scarce regions by 2025.

Young squeezed out of inner city
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/09/29/1032734373987.html
This article discusses the Melbourne property market and that young professionals want to live in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne but can't afford to. They are being priced out of the market by investors buying up these 'lifestyle' locations. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria reported a 103% to 129% increase in the median house price between June 1997 to June 2002 in suburbs such as Fitzroy North and Richmond. REIV found that between 25-30% of market sales were to investors.

Clear Channel Entertainment Artist Availability
http://www.clearchannelcollegeentertainment.com/SearchResults.asp?Artist=%25
Came across this site in the Yahoo Picks newsletter. This site lists the booking price for some of the top music acts around - mainly American. It's intended to be a guide for college gig organisers to use this agency to book acts for college parties. I found Yahoo's comment: "
the ladies of Destiny's Child will say your name for $250k" amusing. You can book Coldplay for $50k, Garbage for $30k, Jamiroquai for $35k, and Macy Gray for $35k for example. All prices in U.S. dollars.

No Time
http://wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,53827,00.html
This 'Wired' magazine article features Karin Spitzer - a 27 year old from New York who has set up a business making bracelets, mousepads etc based on the phrase 'No-time' eg "no time for boys" and many other phrases. It's now a very successful business. You can check out the products on her website at http://www.no-time.com.

Save Karyn
http://www.savekaryn.com
Came across the
'Save Karyn' website on Memepool a while ago. She had a $20K debt - used to have a dot.com type job and bought heaps of expensive things and then lost the job ... She's set up a website to sell some of her items and to collect donations from the public who wish to help her out. You can find out how she saves money in her 'The Daily Buck' column. She writes about saving money by buying 99c macaroni and cheese and not drinking bottled water anymore but refilling the same water bottle. Her writing style makes her column an entertaining read.

Australian Weblogs
http://australian.weblogs.com
I tend to follow a few weblogs and read others every now and again. I also like discovering new ones. They
're great as the weblog writers tend to surf sites and write about whatever interests them. So if you happen to come across someone who has some similar interests, you can read about stuff that may interest you. For some reason, a few of the weblogs I follow are from people living in Seattle. Now I've found an Australian webloggers list and the site even tells you the ones which were most recently updated. Have been checking some of these out and have come across some entertaining ones such as Daniel Bowen's 'Diary of an Average Australian'.

Japanime 2002
