Curvy exhibition - last day today

Today is the last day of the exhibition. It's open from 11am to 7pm, at the Somawo Galleries,
7 Nickson St, Surry Hills. Admission: Free.

I went to the exhibition yesterday. The t-shirt designs and canvases are really diverse and the designs are really great!

If you can't make the exhibition, be sure to check out the CURVY book for $35 as it contains a lot of the work on display as well as the artists' bios. Thanks to Grace for letting me take a few photos of the exhibition for CG.

The exhibition is presented by Yen Magazine and M-One-11

"As an extension to the 2004 Semi Permanent Conference, YEN Magazine is introducing and hosting an exhibition dedicated to the best of female graphic design & illustration worldwide.
To coincide with the launch of Sydney Semi Permanent, CURVY will host the exclusive off-venue exhibition for the conference kicking off April 14th at the Somawo Gallery in Surry Hills for a full 7 days.

100 of the world’s most interesting female designers, illustrators and artists from 18 countries are part of Curvy 2004. CURVY also includes an exciting collection of young female Australian Indigenous artists in the exhibition and book, which is an exciting new development to the initiative.

A selection of the invited Curvy artists will exhibit via large format prints and all 100 have been given a blank MONE11 t-shirt, which has been approached as a clear canvas to be exhibited at Curvy. All works will be offered for sale or auction at the exhibition with the majority of the proceeds of these sales used to establish an art grant for one final year or graduating Australian female art student via an application process over the 12 months following Curvy 2004.

As part of the exhibition series, Curvy will also be published as a high quality, 150-page book available at the Semi Permanent conferences. In addition to its inclusion at the conference and the exhibition, the publication will also be made available for sale nationally following the exhibition through bookstores and your cooler retailers like General Pants."

Popcorn Taxi: QUENTIN TARANTINO - LIVE ON STAGE
'Live' at The Sydney Opera House- Sunday May 2nd - 5pm

"Popcorn Taxi proudly presents an exclusive opportunity for you to join legendary filmmaker QUENTIN TARANTINO in person at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday May 2nd. He will be joined by film journalist MARGARET POMERANZ for a very special on-stage conversation about his films.

TARANTINO took Hollywood by storm in 1992 with his cult hit RESERVOIR DOGS. His combination of clever dialogue and brutal violence hit a new peak in 1994 with PULP FICTION, which won him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and the Palme d’Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. In 1997 he followed up his success with JACKIE BROWN starring PAM GRIER, ROBERT DE NIRO and SAMUEL L. JACKSON, and then recently with KILL BILL (VOL. 1) with UMA THURMAN and LUCY LIU.

As a writer his credits include TRUE ROMANCE directed by TONY SCOTT, NATURAL BORN KILLERS which was heavily reworked by director OLIVER STONE, and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN in which he also starred along side GEORGE CLOONEY, under the direction of ROBERT RODRIGUEZ. An overnight success by Hollywood standards, TARANTINO is without a doubt one of the most influential filmmakers to emerge in the last decade.

This program will include opportunities for questions from the audience, plus a selection of clips from QUENTIN's films throughout the event. KILL BILL (VOL. 2) is released in cinemas nationally this Thursday (April 22nd), and we highly recommend you go see it. You can view the trailer HERE. For more information on Tarantino see his full bio below.

Popcorn Taxi would like to give a very special thanks to DAVID COLLINS, SARAH WARD, MIRAMAX and BUENA VISTA for their generous support in making this event possible."

QUENTIN TARANTINO - BIO

"Born in 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee, QUENTIN TARANTINO was named, fittingly enough, after a character on a TV show, the half-breed blacksmith ‘Quint’ played by BURT REYNOLDS on GUNSMOKE. When he was two, the future filmmaker's single mom moved with him to the South Bay area south of Los Angeles, which was his home for the next two decades.

His neighbourhood in the city of Torrance was a mixture of black and white, and he was exposed to a wide range of film and pop culture influences. Martial arts movies, for example, continued to play in black neighbourhoods for several years after the kung fu fad ended elsewhere; TARANTINO was able to “cross the tracks” to continue watching them until well into the 1970s.

Tarantino quit school at 17 to take acting classes and support himself with odd jobs. At 22 he found a second home of sorts at Video Archives in Manhattan Beach, where his voluminous knowledge of old movies finally began to come in handy. With co-workers ROGER AVERY and JERRY MARTINEZ, TARANTINO turned Video Archives into an impromptu film school. He began writing as a way to supply practice scenes for his acting classes.

After labouring for time with Avery and some other friends on an abortive shoe string feature, MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING, a raunchy buddy film on the scale of KEVIN SMITH’S CLERKS, TARANTINO spent several frustrating years writing and trying to set up two scripts, each intended to be his directorial debut. Partly out of frustration at the difficulty of setting up a “real movie” with an unknown writer attached to direct, TARANTINO wrote RESERVOIR DOGS in 1991.

'DOGS' was intentionally written to be the most minimal project imaginable: a story of a heist in which the robbery occurred off screen, with pages and pages of dialogue requiring only a single set. It was intended to be a super-cheap 16 mm with TARANTINO and his Video Archives buddies playing all the parts.

Luckily, an aspiring producer LAWRENCE BENDER read and loved the 'DOGS' script. He begged TARANTINO to give him a month to try to set it up as one of those “real movies.” It was BENDER who got the script to actor HARVEY KEITEL, and it was KEITEL’S enthusiasm that attracted several other good actors and eventually a decent production budget.

Shot in less than a month in LA locations, with a standout cast that came to include MICHAEL MADSEN, STEVE BUSCEMI, TIM ROTH, LAURENCE TIERNEY, CHRIS PENN, and TARANTINO himself in addition to KEITEL, 'DOGS' was a phenomenal success, first at the Sundance Film Festival and then with the world at large.

And suddenly Tarantino was hot, and both of the scripts he had been working on before 'DOGS' quickly sold: they became TRUE ROMANCE (1992, directed by TONY SCOTT) and NATURAL BORN KILLERS (1993, heavily re-written and directed by OLIVER STONE).

1994’s PULP FICTION was a multi-layered, time-bending, crime fiction collage that wove the stories of several characters together with world-class narrative gusto. A 3-D chess game of a movie, 'PULP' single-handedly restored the career of ‘70s icon JOHN TRAVOLTA to its proper eminence, cemented the movie-star status of actor SAMUEL L. JACKSON, and launched TARANTINO’S working relationship with the performer he has since described as “my actress,” UMA THURMAN.

After a three-year lay-off, TARANTINO wrote and directed JACKIE BROWN, in 1997, a crime caper based on ELMORE LEONARD'S novel RUM PUNCH. PAM GRIER garnered both Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her performance in the title role, and co-star ROBERT FORSTER who was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor. Filling out the once-in-a lifetime cast were SAMUEL L. JACKSON (also nominated for a Golden Globe), ROBERT DE NIRO, BRIDGET FONDA and MICHAEL KEATON.

TARANTINO'S first career goal was to become an actor, and he has continued to play roles in his own films and in the work of others. He was the thief known only as Mr. Brown (“That’s a little too close to ‘Mr.Shit,’”) in RESERVOIR DOGS and the jittery ‘Jimmie Dimmick’, saddled with a fresh corpse, PULP FICTION. In the “MAN FROM HOLLYWOOD” section of FOUR ROOMS he was a blow-hard movie director. He also played bandit GEORGE CLOONEY’S loony brother, ‘Richard Gecko’, in ROBERT RODRIGUEZ’S vampire film FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, played the title role in JACK BAREN’S DESTINY TURNS ON THE RADIO (1995) and appeared in SPIKE LEE’S GIRL 6 (1996).

With his production partner, LAWRENCE BENDER, through their company A BAND APART PRODUCTIONS, TARANTINO served as executive producer on OCTOBER FILM'S KILLING ZOE, directed by ROGER AVERY. He “presented” the 2001 domestic release of MASTER YUEN WO PING'S 1993 martial arts classic IRON MONKEY and served as executive producer of REB BRADDOCK’S black comedy CURDLED (1996) and JULIA SWEENY’S concert film GOD SAID, 'HA!' (1999).

In the four years that elapsed between the release of JACKIE BROWN and the production of KILL BILL, TARANTINO was hard at work on a script for a war movie, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, which has been announced as a MIRAMAX project for 2004."

Energy, Poverty and the Rising Sea - Australia's Role

A forum for non-government organisations engaged in aid or energy issues

Tuesday 4th May 2004 10 am to 1:30pm.

"Climate change has profound implications for the sovereignty of Pacific Island nations. Energy poverty is a living reality for 80 percent of peoples in the Pacific Islands, yet access to reliable forms of energy will increase the social resources of Pacific Islanders to live with elements of climate change that are already occurring.

Sustainable and appropriate forms of energy are required to address energy poverty whilst not contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions. This forum brings together speakers with expert experience in energy politics and appropriate aid delivery to address the barriers and issues of contention to the uptake of renewable energy in Pacific Islands."

Sharon Stevens: A Common Thread - exhibition

Dates 6th-25th April, 2004
At the Washhouse Gallery, 711 Darling St, Rozelle. Phone 0425 248 334
Open: tuesday - sunday 8am-4pm

The exhibition was opened by Richard Goodwin on the 6th April 2004. A few of the sculptures used steel cables threaded through and behind perspex rods and behind a pane of perspex to give the cables a sense of fluidity and movement. It's an interesting idea.

Book review: Trek by David Carson

Title: Trek
Author: David Carson
Publisher: Gingko Press
Year: January 2004
ISBN: 1584230460
Pages: 480

David Carson is a world renowned graphic designer. This is the first of his books that I've looked at and read. The pages are filled with his 'recent werk'. The pages are full of colour, with photographs/images that may or may not be in focus, and which may or may not focus on a particular subject. These images could be laid out anywhere on the page, are of varying sizes, and may or may not overlap each other. They may also be cropped in all sorts of ways. But the final 'layout' is linked and 'balanced' by an overlay and overlap of type and digital illustrations, and patterns, shapes, handwriting, squiggles, and anything else Carson feels like doing on the page. These elements are then further laid out at various angles. Basically anything goes.

You get the impression that this book is Carson's personal scrapbook of graphic design ideas and experiments, as well as a visual diary of things that interest him, his personal moments with his children, friends, people he meets, emails he receives from those inspired by his work and his lectures, and other things he'd like to record.

Carson's graphic design communicates a strong sense of emotion, texture, movement, life, vibrancy, playfulness, experimentation and freedom. He's a keen surfer and perhaps his work reflects how he feels when he's riding waves.

Overall the book is filled with lots of interesting visual ideas and experiments, as well as a couple of interesting essays and quotes, and provides an insight into who and what inspires David Carson. It's a good book to have on hand as flicking through it inspires you to pick up a pencil or a mouse and to just start doodling away.

Comic book artists' work exhibited include:

David Yardin - artist of DISTRICT X, the latest in the bestselling loine of X-men books
Colin Wilson - artist of BLUEBERRY, a much loved book and long-standing character in Europe
Gary Chaloner - artist of BATMAN and JOHN LAW, with Will Eisner, commonly referred to as tthe father of the Graphic Novel

I went to the opening night on Thursday 8th April and heard a panel of a few of the exhibiting artists speak about their work and their passion for their art. One of them advised those in the audience who were contemplating getting into the field to not give up your day job as the comic book art doesn't pay very well and they all do it for the pure love of it.

Where: Kinokuniya Bookstore, Level 2, Galeries Victoria, 500 George St, Sydney.

More pics of the exhibition will be posted on Chaos Generation soon. But check out the exhibition if you get the chance!

Easter Show

Went to the Easter Show at Homebush on Wednesday. Hadn't been to the show at the new venue till now. Found that it was very spread out and because a lot of the facilities and infrastructure was built for the Sydney Olympics 2000, it meant that the show's grounds and facilities were all still very new and clean. Got there around 2pm and left around 8pm. Tix were $26 for adults and included a bus or train ticket to and from the venue.

Visited the arts and crafts hall where there were ribbons awarded for cake decorating, breads and cakes, quilting, quilling, use of recycled materials for artwork, painting, doll dressing, best produce display, and lots of other categories.

Also visited the sheep, horses, cows, pigs, ducks, chickens, goats, and birds. Saw flower exhibits. Saw rides, games with chances to win big fluffy soft toys. Visited the Arnott's exhibit to see how Tiny Teddy biscuits are made. Checked out the showbags hall. Lots of lolly ones as well as the popular characters including The Cat in the Hat, Garfield, Winnie the Pooh, Willy Wonka and heaps of other showbags. They now sell the basic bag and then you can pay another $2 on top of that for the 'extra' item which may be a soft toy or a hat or a larger toy. Saw lots of food like Krispy Kreme donuts - tried my first one - long queue of people waiting to buy them, dog on a stick ie boiled hotdog which is then fired in batter with a stick through it so you can eat it easily like a paddle pop, corn cob on a stick, snow cones, fairy floss, hot chips, waffles, gozleme, chinese takeaway food, bbq chicken, catered food, gelato, ice-cream, and lots more fun fair type food.

Took heaps of photos. Will post them up real soon!

Free Chinese films showing at the Art Gallery of NSW
[7 April - 2 May 2004]

There are some free Chinese films showing at the Art Gallery of NSW (from 4th + 5th Generation Chinese filmmakers) to coincide with the Fantastic Mountains exhibition [http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/current/fantastic_mountains]

Fantastic Mountains Films The Fifth Generation

Wednesdays, 2.30pm, 7.15pm
Sundays 2.30pm
7 April - 2 May 2004
Domain Theatre, Lower Level 3

Feature films by Chinese fourth and fifth generation filmmakers.

"Chinese cinema's Fifth Generation film-makers began their careers at the Beijing Film Academy after it was re-opened in 1978. As the country's only film school, it had been closed to students during the Cultural Revolution. Within a less restrictive political environment, many of these new directors took village life as the focus of their stories and chose women as central characters, depicting them as strong and individualistic. The Cultural Revolution and the way it influenced and shaped the lives of many Chinese has also become their common theme. As a result, many of their films have been subject to rigorous censorship in China. This series put the Fifth Generation film-makers in context, showing not only some of their representative films, but also featuring film-makers of a previous generation who influenced them, and later films influenced by the Fifth Generation."

Movies that will be screened are: Old Well, The Blue Kite, Red Sorghum, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ermo, Raise the Red Lantern, Hibiscus Town and Yellow Earth.

Popcorn Taxi: Brett Leonard - on-stage conversation

Wednesday April 14th - 7:30 pm, Valhalla Cinemas, Glebe, Sydney

"In 2003, the Producers of SPIDER MAN, DAREDEVIL, XMEN and BLADE teamed up with director BRETT LEONARD (LAWNMOWER MAN, VIRTUOSITY starring RUSSELL CROWE) for the production of MAN-THING, based on the Marvel Comics legendary swamp creature of the 70's. Popcorn Taxi welcomes BRETT LEONARD to a 'fireside chat' about directing action, thriller, fantasy and horror films. After developing a successful working relationship in VIRTUOSITY, BRETT and RUSSELL CROWE later co-produced RUSSELL'S directing debut, the documentary TEXAS: Thirty-Odd Foot of Grunts. The evening will include a Popcorn Taxi style audience Q&A moderated by filmmaker YVES STENING.

The MAN-THING, described as is a vengeful creature born from the evil and injustices perpetrated against both man and nature was adapted by screenwriter HANS RODINOFF from the cult comic book series that was first published by Marvel in 1971. The film, due for a Halloween 2004 release, was shot completely on location in Sydney and stars a strong Australian contingent with JACK THOMPSON (BREAKER MORANT, THE SUM OF US, STAR WARS), MATTHEW LE NEVEZ (PEACHES, 2004), STEVE BASTONI (BLUE MURDER, THE MATRIX, POLICE RESCUE), ROBERT MAMMONE (THE GREAT RAID 2004, SALEM'S LOT 2004, THE CROSSING) and New Zealand Actor RAWIRI PARATENE (WHALE RIDER)

An effects pioneer, Brett will focus especially on directing with digital effects in mind and will illustrate his craft with clips from VIRTUOSITY and MAN-THING. But there is more to storytelling in the digital age than just knowing how to use the technology. How do you direct actors against a green screen and how do you know if the edit works when there are so many bits missing? BRETT will be joined on-stage by his long-term collaborator, GIMEL EVERETT, who has produced all his films since 1992. Join Popcorn Taxi for a special sneak preview of clips from MAN-THING with an opportunity to get an insight into making films with Marvel Studios."

Easter eggs

There's a chocolate wholesaler at 147 New Canterbury Rd, Petersham called 'Georgiou's Wholesale Confectionary'. They have a range of chocolates including Lindt, Ernest Miller, Almond rocas, Baci's and more. Went there today and bought a 'bit' of choccie there. It's like walking into a lolly supermarket!

Zinc Bar

Wanted to go out for a brunchy snack last week. Was thinking along the lines of Bills in Darlinghurst. But there was a very long queue of people already waiting for a table. So kept driving on to Potts Point. Came across the Zinc Bar on Macleay St. People were queuing here too but it only took a few minutes to get a table. Had the poached eggs on cured salmon on their crusty bread. It was pretty nice. The next street along is Spring St. There were a number of cafes on that street as well that were all packed!
