Random Play looks like a great show to go to. Halftix are selling tickets for $27 for A Reserve seating for tonight and tomorrow's night performance. Tomorrow night's show is the last show. Ticketek are also selling the tickets but for the standard price of $39 for A Reserve tickets. (If you wanted different seating, you could go to ticketek and get Premium or B or C Reserve seating. If you're a student, it's actually cheaper to get tickets from Ticketek - $21 for A reserve etc). "Sydney Dance Company and NIDA Design join forces to present Random Play. Four choreographers from Sydney Dance Company collaborate with four set designers and four costume designers from NIDA Design to bring you Random Play - a program of four new contemporary dance works. Exploring universal themes from very individual perspectives, this diverse program delights in the distinctive movement language and innovative visual design of each work. Inspired by an eclectic mix of original and existing music, Random Play features Sydney Dance Companys acclaimed troupe of seventeen dancers in an evening of dynamic physicality. Intimately presented at the magnificent Parade Theatre, Random Play is an opportunity to experience new works performed by Australias premier contemporary dance troupe." PLAY - Dance Charlton Hill and Francis Ford Corolla at the Vanguard It was a great night! The Vanguard is a great music venue. It's a small, intimate space. Not that I've been to jazz clubs in New Orleans, but I imagined that it could be something like this, but in the heart of Newtown. Andy Lawler was great on vocals from Francis Ford Corolla. Loved the song 'Spinach Princess'. You can get their cassette titled 'Sonicfairy'. They'll have a website up soon too. In the meantime, you can be added to their email list by emailing them at sonicfairy@hotmail.com. Charlton Hill was great! His guitarist Tim also did a set before Charlton as the 2nd support act didn't show. They're all so talented - can play a range of instruments, sing, the whole lot. It's the first time I've heard Charlton sing live and he really has a great voice! It was a great night out!! 031125: Tue Charlton Hill
Charlton Hill will be performing at the Vanguard in Newtown tonight! The Vanguard is a new live jazz, blues etc music venue at 42 King St, Newtown! Will be going to this gig tonight! off the map
The book started off being distributed as a free zine and then it eventually got published by CrimethInc and sold for a small amount so that it could be continued to be distributed. Have just started reading it. Looks like it's going to be a great read so far. About the book: "A punk rock vision quest told in the tradition of the anarchist travel story, Off the Map is narrated by two young women as they discard their maps, fears, and anything resembling a plan, and set off on the winds of the world. Without the smug cynicism that seems to permeate most modern radical tales, this story is told with genuine hope, and a voice that never loses its connection with the mysteries of life, even in the midst of everyday tragedies. Wandering across Europe, the dozens of vignettes are the details of the wholea squatted castle surrounded by tourists on the Spanish coast, a philosophizing businessman on the highways of France, a plaça full of los crustos in Barcelona, a diseased foot in a Belgian train squat, a glow bug on the dew-covered grass of anywherea magical, novel-like folktale for the end of the world." The book is 146 pages long with a cover featuring original artwork by Nikki McClure CrimethInc Did a quick search on CrimethInc and found it to be a really cool website with links to independent media with a theme of anarchy and anti-establishment sentiment. The website says:
Japanese Story
Watched Japanese
Story last Thursday night at the Dendy, Opera Quays. Toni Collette
and Gotaro Tsunashima were both great in this film! Themes of this film
seemed to be self-discovery, love and rediscovering a passion for life.
From the 'Japanese Story' website: "Winners for the 2003 Lexus IF (Inside Film) Awards were announced in Sydney on 13 November at a prestigious event staged at Wharf 8 in Pyrmont. Hosted by Deborah Mailman, the live broadcast was followed by a celebratory party presented by Autore South Sea Pearls. Japanese Story collected four IF awards including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Actress and Best Cinematography." 031120: Thu The Surface is coming - virtual festival for "youth" over 25yrs "The Surface is a virtual festival for arts, new media, entertainment, and alternative culture. The Surface is different to other sub-culture websites, because its for "youth" over the age of 25! Have you ever been excited about the prospect of working on a new project, entering a competition, or showcasing your work at a festival, only to be told Sorry, our age cut-off is 25 years. or Youre too old. ??? This site exists to demonstrate that even though were over 25, were still young, still have a lot to offer, and still want the opportunity to share our talents with the world.
To get involved,
submit your work, or just want to know what the hell is going on here... [act-km] Invitation to NSW KM forum December dinner / meeting - 4th December 2003, Sydney
"The NSW KM forum are heading out for dinner for our December meeting. This will be on the first Thursday of the month, as usual, so Thursday December 4th. We will start at 6pm. All are welcome. There will be no speakers, just a chance to chat and get to know each other and talk about the interesting things we are all doing.
I have booked tables at the Regal Restaurant, 347-353 Sussex St, Sydney. This Chinese restaurant (big round tables and great food...) is close to Standards Australia, where our meetings are usually held. From Standards Australia walk south towards Chinatown for almost a block and a half along Sussex St, its on the right. Easy to find!
Please RSVP to me (cristownley@optusnet.com.au) by Friday 28th November, since I need to get a better estimate of numbers to the restaurant.
See you there, Matrix Revolutions No doubt almost everyone's seen the last instalment. My quick thought about it: they should have stopped at the first one! There were no expectations of the first film whatsoever and it appeared on our screens and it was such a nice surprise to see such a cool film. They threw money at the second one and there were some nice effects but it's literally impossible to blow people away with the second one as they already have a set of expectations and have all the imagery of the first one still in their minds. Also, trying to continue a story when the first one was kind of self-contained is pretty difficult. The third one got a bit visually mind-numbing - lots of scenes similar to what you see in a video game except you watch and don't get to play. After a couple of minutes of seeing the octopus-like objects made out of metal casing cords etc, you kind of get the picture of the scale of the battle. I kind of missed the amount of kung-fu action in the previous ones. Anyway, having said that, I still absolutely loved the first one and would've seen the next two or however many they ended up making in the series regardless. Weblogger meetup? Turned up at the Weblogger meeting last night to find no-one there? The people at the cafe didn't know of any Weblogger meetup. Got there about 20mins late so not sure if they decided to go somewhere else or whether people just decided to just not turn up at the last minute. [Australian Idol finals were on that night as well so maybe that was a factor ;-) ]. But waited another 20mins outside then decided to go get some dinner and to finally watch the Matrix Revolutions with a friend of mine. 031118: Tue Newtown Festival - uploaded full sized images Have optimised the thumbnail and full sized photos I took at the Newtown Festival now. McCahon Exhibit: A Question of Faith - NZ artist "Colin McCahon (Timaru 1919 - Auckland 1987, New Zealand) is the most extraordinary artist in the Southern Hemisphere and certainly the most ambitious and radical of his time. New Zealand's first painter of major importance, his impact on the arts in that country is such that it is impossible to be an artist there without taking his work into account. Since his death in 1987 his work and life as a painter, teacher and museum curator have become the subject of much discussion and research. Organised by Dr Marja Bloem of the Stedelijk Museum in Holland, the exhibition Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith presents more than 70 works by this major modernist painter and concludes its international tour in Sydney. The exhibition will be on view at The Art Gallery of New South Wales from 15 November 2003 to 18 January 2004. Central to McCahon's oeuvre is the investigation of the true nature of faith and his own spiritual experience and development. Covering all periods of his career from the late 1930s to the early 1980s, the included works are on loan from public and private collections in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. " For more info on the exhibition: http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/media/current/colin_mccahon For more

It's Jyoti on the right in the second pic. Got immersed in looking at the zines. Ended up spending over $50 on various zines. I ended up staying at the festival for over 4 hours. I enjoyed walking around the stalls, taking photos, enjoying the music and tried a mango ice crush drink - yum! There were literally crowds and crowds of people. Got v. sunburnt as well. Esquisse -
27-30 November 2003 in Surry Hills and Redfern "In November this year, Sydney Esquisse will open its doors for the first time. The aim is to show how art and design contribute to everyday life in our city. You will see product design, furniture, graphics, fashion, photography, interiors, video, sound, architecture, sculpture, painting and endless ideas. This festival will transform Sydneys areas of Surry Hills and Redfern into a multiple-site show case. It will be the first of its kind in Australia and will feature more than 50 Australian and International designers and artists, involve over 30 venues (including a central venue, the Launch Pad), and host many awards, competitions, parties and auctions. Sydney Esquisse is not a design-for-designers event, but rather an attempt to communicate to both the creative community and the wider public audience how creativity relates, explores and contributes to the culture in which we live. This event will provide designers and artists with a platform to develop and grow ideas, relationships and discussion and to evolve the cultural landscape of Sydney and Australia. Sydney Esquisse is everyones opportunity to experience design and art beyond the usual functional and commercial rules of the game. We invite all participants to play with - not within - the rules of design, art and our city." For more info, go to the Sydney Esquisse website.
