Minority Report

Went and saw 'Minority Report' last night. Since it's just come out, I thought it'd be pretty packed out but it wasn't at all. I guess most people stayed in to watch the World Cup instead. I thought it was going to be an action flick but it ended up being a bit more eerie and creepy than I expected. I liked the way the film was shot. The colours were dark, washed out blues, greys and blacks mainly. There was also a lot of layering of images which worked very well.

Jewel's book, Paul Frank and the 'Rolling Stone' yearbook magazine.

Angus and Robertson were and maybe still? are having a book sale in the Pitt St mall store. Saw Jewel's book for sale. It's the one which is kind of like a diary. It contains poetry she's written, photographs of nature and animals as well as of her with various people in her life. It was the hardcover version and it was going for $7. I like Jewel's music but what I found appealing about this book was the layout of the book. It wasn't like the usual autobiographies or stories of the stars - it was nicely designed. May go back and get it for visual reference.

Also read that Paul Frank has put out a book about his work/ideas. May go and see if I can find it to have a look at.

Just finished reading the 'Rolling Stone' yearbook 2001/2002. I had heard it's a good publication but never really picked it up before. Well this issue is great! Read about Alicia Keys and how she ended up producing her own music to get the sound she wanted, Britney Spears, The Making of John Lennon's 'Imagine' song where the lyrics were written 30 years pre September 11, a summary of the year in politics and the attitudes and actions of the various parties in regards to the asylum seekers, Bono, Something for Kate and much more. The articles are well written and very easy to read.

Chocolate

All I can say is yummy! I am particularly fond of the Cadbury Caramello chocolate at the moment - it's especially nice with a cup of tea or with a hot milo drink.

109a.com

I came across this site too late. I found it a couple of days before the official exhibition/open house ended. Otherwise I would've gone down to Melbourne to check it out. I love the idea they're promoting ie the virtual collaboration of artists' - and living and working in a warehouse space. You can still check out some of the images from the event and find out more about the house, the artists etc. Luckily, they've still left the material up on their website at http://www.109a.com.

Paddington Markets

I have love of markets. I just feel they've got an earthy, community spirit feel to them. Walked around Paddington markets last week. It was great. Saw heaps of cool things. Saw some nice photographic prints - one guy took like passsport sized photos of tree branches against the silouhette of the afternoon sun and put them all together in a series. Kind of like the lomo idea. I love that kind of image. I need to get out there more and take heaps of photos as well. I used to go out occasionally on a nice weekend and take photos of things like old powerstations with the rusting corrugated steel turned orangey brown against the sunset and I also love trees in the Winter time and just looking at the branches and finding an interesting composition of shapes and all sorts of other natural imagery.

Also saw some beautiful leather wrap journals. May have to go back and get one of those. I like the idea of carrying around one of those everywhere - like a thought/ideas journal. I want to start keeping a visual diary as well. At the moment, the items I want to keep are just thrown into a box. But that's kind of ok too as it's quite an experience to get out the box when you're doing a yearly tidy up of your room and you look through the box and rediscover the images and other materials again.

Also saw these bags where it's like a nice patterned piece of fabric is inserted into a plastic sleeve which is the design of the outside of the bag. Saw this in the Bleeker St markets in New York last year. I also love the furry look at the moment - so soft to touch ie that black or dark brown feathery look on cushions, clothes, bags etc. I bought a slightly furry looking top the other day. The collar, front and sleeves feel furry. It's a great top! :-).

Other fun buys

Got myself a nice little cheap radio the other week too. It's really light and I plug my own Sony earphones into it and carry with it with me everywhere. I find buying a CDs an expensive exercise and you wear them out too quickly ie listen to the songs to death so I bought this radio so I can listen to the latest music on rotation for free so to speak. Got it for $10 at 'King Kong' near Town Hall. Saw the same radio at Paddy's market last week for $17. I always thought the markets would be much cheaper as I assumed they pay lower rent for their stalls.

Also managed to see some really cool fluffy, furry pink slippers the other day. Couldn't go past them.

Bladerunner and Spiderman

Borrowed the 'Bladerunner' video - director's cut. Not sure I want to watch that version though because I like happy endings and I've been told that the director's cut isn't a happy ending. So I'll see. Maybe I'll watch the other version instead.

Watched 'Spiderman' on Sunday night. Perhaps I heard all this hype about how good it was. I found it ok. I heard that it was being true to the 'Spiderman' comics. Again I like happy endings. Tobey Maguire plays a pretty cool 'Spiderman' though. I heard that the original 'Spiderman' was somewhat of a 'loser' and then when he got a supermodel wife, the comic was less popular so they kill off the supermodel wife character so he's kind of like back where he was or something. I think that's pretty sad if it's true. I want to see people succeed and achieve great things and be happy. Why not. I think that should inspire people to buy the comics not turn them away. It's all fiction and in the name of entertainment anyway. To me, I want to be entertained by movies in a fun, light-hearted escapism way, not be bogged down by serious emotions etc. But then that's just me.

Watching heaps of tele

I've been following 'Big Brother' but the last week or so, I've managed to miss a few episodes because I've been out and about and haven't bothered to tape it. I missed the dance routine as a result. I actually wanted to see that YTT* like routine. Oh well. I don't really care who gets evicted from here on in. I think Pete or Marty will probably win though. Or maybe even Jess the dancing, singing girl. If YTT hadn't ended, she'd be one of the YTT team I reckon. *YTT stands for Young Talent Time - a Sunday night show in the 70s and 80s featuring young kids singing and dancing to pop songs of that era.

I thought Mirabai was pretty cool. Damien's pretty cool too. It's interesting how he was the first one to be evicted from the house yet he obviously made quite a big impact as they keep bringing him back onto the show. He looks so much like Dean Cain. He could probably make a career for himself in TV or film if he wanted to.

After BB, I watched 'Alias' and then watched the 'Behind the scenes of the Secret Life of Us' - time shifting with the video.

Then tonight Gretel's going into the BB house to present some surprise challenge to the housemates.

Funny thing is I don't usually watch much tv at all but since I decided to check out what the fuss with BB was all about, I seem to be watching a bit of tv these days.

Maggi Noodles

Just tried one of those 'Maggi Snack Stop' Thai chicken noodles. You pour boiling water in and stir for 30 seconds and voila you have a snack. It was a bit too 'instant' for my taste. It had the flavour already mixed in with the noodles which I don't like. I also obviously didn't stir it enough either because it was very gluggy at the bottom. I had about one spoonful and poured the rest of it out.

I don't mind their 'Maggi 2 minute noodles' as you can boil it in a saucepan and add egg and ham and some vegies and put a little bit of the flavour in as opposed to the whole satchel since the flavour comes in its own separate packet. I ended up eating cereal with milk, a cup of tea and a mandarin instead. Need to find some other alternatives. I like to have some hot food during the 'cold'* Winter months. *I've been told it doesn't get v.cold in Sydney but hey it's cold enough to want a nice hot snack for brekkie or lunch.

Meriton and the Regis Towers

There was an article in the SMH about the owners of apartments in a city building not being told for five months that a fire order had been placed on their units, because it is claimed that the owners' corporation voted against telling them. The City of Sydney Council has now taken Meriton to court to compel it to fix defects in Regis Towers and two other large city apartment buildings. In the case of Regis Towers, the council alleges the building fails to meet the building codes because walls between units do not join the slab above and fire collars are missing. These defects would allow fire to spread between units... I'm thinking that Meriton is such a big brand name for apartment developers and the management would've been much better off fixing it and saying they were socially responsible and caring rather than trying to save some money by taking this course of action. Not very clever PR. It ends up giving the potential consumer a potentially negative rather than positive image about the company.
