Q+A with Betty King, co-director of the Red Carpet events
Betty King and Sarah Runcie are the organisers of the Red Carpet events

What are the Red Carpet Nights all about?

Redcarpet is about the opportunity for filmmakers of all standards to show their films. We try to provide a range of standards from first time beginner to established filmmaker and a variety of genre which provides our audience with a great nights entertainment. Everyone who works for Redcarpet volunteers their time and all profits for the evening go to a nominated charity.

How did you come up with the idea of Red Carpet?

There is no regular short film screening in Sydney that is at a cinema so we decided to create one.

When did you first start the Red Carpet events?

September 2002

How is it different to some of the other short film festivals around?

We encourage beginners to submit by showing first time beginner films to some of the countries most award winning films. As far as we are concerned the evening is the filmmakers special night so we try to work with the filmmakers to make the evening the best it can be. Also all our profits go to charity.

Have you heard of any success stories from the filmmakers since showing
their film at a Red Carpet night?

A lot of our filmmakers films have been shown as beginner efforts and gone on to be award winning films at other festivals.

Do you have further plans/objectives for the Red Carpet concept?

Not at present, although we would love to have a session at the Open Air Cinema!!!

Do you see the popularity of short films increasing? Why?

I think it’s forever got people interested, because it’s such a fun medium and also with digital cameras and easily access editing software anyone can give it a go.

Why is promoting short films important?

It allows the filmmaker to be creative and express their ideas and voice their opinions on important matters. It also gives filmmakers an opportunity to get that foot in the industry door.

How do you come up with the themes for Red Carpet nights?

We sometimes get films submitted that are the same subject matter or of a genre which is not common, or we just think “hey that’s a fun theme.. let’s do it!!”

How many do you organise a year?

4 screenings a year.

What charities has the Red Carpet night supported?

Amnesty International, Northern Beaches Interchange Inc and The Big Issue(thru the Big Issue Film Festival), we hope to work with more charities in the coming years. There’s so many great causes out there. Charities can also contact us if they like.

How do you promote the Red Carpet night events?

Word of mouth, newspapers, internet.

Can people volunteer to help out at a Red Carpet event?

Most definitely, sign up now. Always ushering assistance is great and anyone interested in learning how to direct a film festival is more than welcome to work as a assistant director if they like.
